Competition hits the netball court for Melbourne’s ad agencies

Melbourne’s advertising industry is preparing to compete on a different type of pitch on Friday 19 July, with the first ever Communications Council Agency vs Agency Mixed Netball Competition. We are set to see more than 12 of Melbourne’s leading agencies pull on their bibs and hit the courts at Albert Park Indoor Sports Centre.

Rumours are flying about the lengths various teams are willing to go to secure the Cup. Among them, Saatchi & Saatchi Melbourne has apparently begun recruiting 7-foot tall freelancers with extraordinary athletic backgrounds. When pressed on the rumour Managing Director Mark Cochrane said: “Absolutely no comment on this topic…but LeBron James is a great data planner.”

Independent agency Noisy Beast is looking forward to the competition. Seen as this year’s dark horse, they are suspected to be a sharp contender given their long-term association with client Swisse Vitamins and rumoured ‘top secret nutritional program’.

Between the regular undertow of pitches and production, agencies have been pulling out all the stops this year to ensure their teams are in peak physical condition. According to James King, Wing Attack and Account Executive at the newly branded Wunderman Thompson, “I thought this was going to be fun, but the lunchtime runs are starting to wear me down”.

Emily Howat, Account Manager at AJF GrowthOps, dispelled any doubts about how competitive this event will be, saying: “Skills in creative and strategy are one thing, but we’ve found that what really counts is netball skills. So we won’t just be destroying the competition in the boardroom, we’ll be smashing them on the court too.”

Amy Lee, Victorian State Manager for The Communications Council and organiser of the event, said: “This is the first time we have run this competition and it’s creating quite the excitement. It’s great to see the industry getting so into this contest. It will be a fantastic afternoon for everyone involved.”

Sponsors of the event are Peach and Albert Park Indoor Sports Centre.

Team registrations are still open (Melbourne members of The Communications Council only). To register, or for more info on the Agency vs Agency Mixed Netball Competition, please contact Amy Lee at amy.lee@communicationscouncil.org.au
