In a collaboration between Friends of Rhonda and Truce Production Co, more than 150 queer people and allies came together last week for Queerxhibit — the industry’s first dedicated showcase of queer creative talent.
The exhibition featured over 25 artists working across advertising, media and film, each highlighting the unique perspectives and cultural influence queer creatives bring to the industry. The evening was hosted by Friends of Rhonda founder Jules Stretch, aka Mum the Drag Queen, who set the tone:
“I often hear that industry leaders are searching for talent immersed in culture and creating amazing things outside the workplace. Queer people do that in droves, so it’s my immense pleasure to showcase artists who prove just that.”
Attendees included tastemakers and senior leaders who explored the artworks, absorbed new perspectives, and were urged to consider the exhibiting creatives for future projects. As Stretch summed up: “The battle cry for the evening, in simple terms, was HIRE MORE QUEERS!”
Among the artists was Huei Yin Wong, Senior Creative and AWARD School Head in Victoria.
“I’m excited by work that embraces uncertainty and experimentation: projects where the outcome isn’t obvious from the start. The industry could use more inspiration from beyond its own bubble, because when we bring in fresh perspectives, the work becomes more original, exciting and meaningful.”
Photographer Heather Dinas added: “Having more diverse voices and perspectives in this industry is important. Not having it is dangerous because when you have a narrow voice influencing the masses, it doesn’t lead to a good outcome.”
For the first time, Friends of Rhonda opened an event to allies, a move committee member Alayna Kunitake described as vital:
“I’m a big believer in the importance of spaces for the queer community, which is what Friends of Rhonda primarily exists as, but it’s also powerful when the industry comes together and worlds collide. If guests left Queerxhibit with even just one new perspective to take back to their workplaces, that’s exciting.”
All artists featured at Queerxhibit are listed on friendsofrhonda.org, a ready-made directory for industry leaders seeking fresh creative talent.
Special thanks went to event producers Alana Taylor, Elise Trenorden and the Truce team, agency and brand sponsors Hellions and Puffin Post, photographer Laura Du Ve, Andy on the bar, DJ Y2Gay for the beats, Brother John for the food, and Remedy Drinks and Bodriggy for the beverages.
