A panel to address over 300 advertising, journalism and PR students at UNSW is being used to help promote the relaunched Communications Council Graduate Program and  strengthen relationships with key universities.

The panel addressed students nearing graduation in the Media Portfolio course and featured Brendan Willenberg, creative director of Clemenger BBDO, who delivered home truths sprinkled among Game of Thrones analogies which the students found hilarious, while Kat Kelly, group content director from The Monkeys, talked through her journey into advertising and the power of storytelling.

Recent graduate Olly Smith, who is now with Clemenger BBDO also shared what his job is really all about and gave the students some practical tips on how to stand out from the pack. Jane Mathews from the Comms Council talked about advertising as a career and introduced the new Grad Program.

The queue of students lining up afterwards to talk to the panel members was proof of the success of the industry transition course. This was confirmed by course supervisor, Emma Jane who identified the integration of industry as key for the students to grasp.

“Given the volatility of the media and comms industries right now, having industry representatives come in to chat to students directly is the best way to ensure the material they receive is current.” she said.
